Would you pay £450 for a bowl of strawberries and cream? A bar in Manchester has hit the record books for producing the world’s most expensive version of the popular British summer dessert. The special edition treat is being served up at the swanky Circle 360 champagne bar in The Trafford Centre to celebrate the Wimbledon Championships 2012.
How have they managed to elevate a bowl of fruit to a dessert worth four hundred and fifty of your hard-earned pounds? Well, the Jasper Conran crystal bowl they’re served in helps; worth £160 on its own, diners are allowed to keep the dish as a memento. The dessert itself features a vintage champagne mousse made from a bottle of Pommery Cuvee Louise 1999 that costs a staggering £750 per bottle. Add to that a scoop of mandarin ice cream, a brandy snap basket for texture and of course the main event – perfectly ripe strawberries, all handpicked locally.
“Strawberries and cream are the Wimbledon fans favourite sweet, so we thought it would be a great idea to introduce this exclusively to our menu,” said Norris Panton, the owner of Circle 360. “It might be the world’s most expensive strawberries and cream, but it is definitely worth the money. It’s delicious!”
In Blink office, we’d rather spend our cash on something a bit more meaningful than a bowl of strawberries we’ll have snaffled up in no time. £450 could surely buy you some tickets to Wimbledon itself – an experience you’d never forget! Or, for a fraction of that cost you can spend a day foraging for wild fruit – an interesting experience and you could even handpick your own strawberries for dessert. Or for the ultimate grassroots approach, learn how to grow your own!
